If you’ve ever visited someplace with an interactive water fountain, chances are it caught your attention. For those with children or simply young of heart, it’s an attraction to be explored and revisited time and time again. For some, the interactive fountain is a destination, and for others who unexpectedly happen upon it, a delightful surprise that offers a playful experience, fond memory, and unforgettable story.
Interactive fountains are a trend across the country and around the world. Their appeal is easy to understand, as the design incorporates the beauty and lure of water without the above ground pool of water. Without the collection of water above ground to consider, the fountain design features focus on flush ground spray nozzles that create unique water patterns. The water jets can be programmed to turn on and off for fun, safe interactive play that many families seek as the most adored features of a splash pad. The water dances through the air, lands on the ground, and disappears into drains that carry the water into an unseen reservoir that is designed to filter and clean the water. The jets come with LED lighting for night time illumination and color changing capabilities, extending the use of the interactive fountain into the evening and nighttime hours when desired.
Providing a dual purpose of beauty and interaction, these types of water features are popping up in public places including amusement parks, town squares, community spaces, and more. Commercial Aquatic Engineering (CAE) designed an interactive fountain for Wynkoop Plaza at the Denver Union Station that features ninety-two custom sequencing angled jets, LED lighting, and fully automated recirculation/filtration system. The mechanical system is contained in a below ground vault and 15,000 gallon water tank adjacent to the water feature.
Special Considerations for Interactive Water Fountain Designs
These types of fountains require state health department approval and certifications. The requirements for interactive fountains vary from state to state, but generally require certain water volumes, filtration rates, chemical treatment, and UV systems. CAE is experienced in interactive fountain design and the special considerations that need to be accounted for in the initial design phases. Our team will work with you to ensure your project adheres to governing policies and timelines so that the finished project will be a source of pride and point of interest in your community.
